stands for all things,
even for those things that don’t flower,
for everything flowers, from within, of self-blessing;

Many years ago, during one of those traumatic times life can throw at you, I read these words from Galway Kinnell’s “Saint Francis and the Sow” in the original (1995) edition of Sharon Salzberg’s Lovingkindness : the revolutionary art of happiness.
Now, over 20 years later, I can still re-feel the wave of relief and hope that washed through me as I read these words. I knew, to the core of my being, they were true. It sounds dramatic, but it’s probably true that they changed my life. Certainly the book as a whole did. Reading it turned out to be the first step in what’s become my quest to cultivate kindness and make it the focus of my life.
